Executive profile

More than four decades building and leading businesses in the oil and gas industry, from exploration and production to energy services and midstream.

Thomas E. Kelly graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977. He began his career with First National Bank of Granbury and, in 1979, moved to Midland, Texas, to join First National Bank of Midland.

In 1981 he co-founded Baytech Inc., an oil and gas exploration and production company with operations in West Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Wyoming and North Dakota. His experience spans the full life of an oil and gas asset: developing the prospect, acquiring the drilling acreage, raising funds for drilling, supervising completion, and managing revenue distribution and the operation of the producing asset.

Across his career, Mr. Kelly has developed a core group of long-term investors, relationships with financial institutions and a broad-based advisory team, partnering with operating companies that apply advanced technologies to the development of natural gas and oil reserves. His activities have focused on well-known productive areas including the Permian Basin, the Bakken, the Bend Arch of North Central Texas and South America.

    Baylor University

    Graduates with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

  2. 1979

    First National Bank of Midland

    After beginning his career with First National Bank of Granbury, moves to Midland, Texas.

  3. 1981

    Co-founds Baytech Inc.

    An oil and gas exploration and production company operating in West Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Wyoming and North Dakota.

  4. 1999

    West Texas acquisition

    Baytech acquires all of American Petrofina’s West Texas assets for $96 million, at a time when oil traded at around $11 per barrel.

  5. 2002

    Sale to Energen

    The West Texas assets are sold to Energen for $206 million, at an oil price of around $27 per barrel.

  6. 2008

    United Fuel & Energy

    United Fuel & Energy, founded by Mr. Kelly, is sold to SC Fuels of California.

    United Fuel & Energy

    A provider of fuel, lubricants, propane and related services in the Permian Basin, formed through the combination of businesses across West Texas, New Mexico and East Texas markets and grown through thirteen acquisitions.

  • Co-founder

    ProPetro Services

    A multifaceted well service business with operations in the Permian Basin of West Texas and the Uinta Basin of Utah, providing stimulation, well servicing, drilling and cementing services.

  • Founder & Chief Executive Officer

    BPZ Energy

    A Houston-based oil and gas exploration company with operations in Peru and Ecuador, which made multiple discoveries in Peru.

  • Co-founder

    Upland Oil & Gas

    An exploration company in Central Peru whose assets comprised Exploration Block XIV and TEA Blocks I to IV, which merged with Calgary-based Petro Toro Energy.

  • Co-founder

    Valor Petroleum

    A Dallas-based exploration company focused on the Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas and the Mississippian Lime in Oklahoma. Valor owned StarMex LLC, a midstream pipeline company with oil gathering and transportation assets in the Eagle Ford.

Owned and operated by the Kelly family, alongside Wagyu cattle ranches in Jeff Davis and Ellis Counties, Texas. Mr. Kelly grew up in Fort Davis, Texas.
